What is Lamisil used for?
Lamisil is indicated for the treatment of interdigital-type pedis (athlete’s foot), tinea cruris (jock itch) and tinea corporis (ringworm) caused by Trichophyton (e.g. T. rubrum, T. mentagrophytes, T. verruccosum, T. violaceum), Microsporum canis and Epidermophyton floccosum.
Lamisil is also indicated for Yeast infections of the skin principally those caused by genus candida (e.g. candida albicans), pityriasis (tinea) versicolor due to pityrosporum orbiculate (also known as malassezia furfur).
Terbinafine hydrochloride, the active substance in Lamisil, is a synthetic allylamine derivative. Terbinafine hydrochloride is hypothesized to act by inhibiting the epoxidation of squalene, thus blocking the biosynthesis of ergosterol, an essential component of fungal cell membranes, resulting in fungal cell death.
Terbinafine hydrochloride, when given topically, has a rapid onset of action and can be effective with short treatment duration.
